  • Glutamine
Glutamine is an amino acid widely recognised for its role in supporting gut health. It protects the structural integrity of the gut lining, reducing permeability, and helping to heal a leaky gut. Glutamine is a preferred energy source for the intestinal cells, supports gut immune function, and is important for the production of secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA), which acts as the body’s first line of defence and prevents the attachment of pathogens to mucosal cells.

    Slippery elm
Slippery elm is an ancient herbal remedy best known for its use as a demulcent to help soothe an irritated or unsettled stomach. Slippery elm works by forming a protective and healing barrier over  gastrointestinal mucous membranes which helps to reduce inflammation and repair damaged tissues. Studies show that slippery elm is beneficial in reducing symptoms of IBS and IBD.

Both licorice and slippery elm are often used to treat hyperacidity, ulcerative conditions and compromised mucous membranes.

Glycine is an amino acid that plays many important roles in the body, including the support of healthy digestion. Insufficient glycine levels can lead to impaired digestive function, such as reduced bile acid production, which can lead to fat malabsorption and deficiencies in the fat-soluble vitamins. Glycine also contributes to healthy metabolism, growth, and immunity.

MSM is a potent anti-inflammatory compound that may assist in rebuilding and maintaining the lining of the gastrointestinal tract, thus reducing symptoms of leaky gut. MSM may be effective in reducing oxidative stress and inflammation that can weaken immunity, and it has been shown to decrease allergic reactions by inhibiting the release of cytokines and prostaglandins.

Pectin is a soluble fibre with prebiotic properties. It acts as a food source to support the growth of beneficial bacteria living in the gut, which can decrease inflammation and improve gastrointestinal symptoms. Pectin increases both the viscosity and volume of stool, making it beneficial in the treatment of both constipation and diarrhoea. Because of its gelling nature, pectin is able to bind to toxins in the gut and eliminate them from the body through the stool.

    Marshmallow Root
Marshmallow root has a high mucilage content and demulcent properties. This natural root extract can help stimulate protective mucus secretion within the gut, helping to soothe gut irritation and inflammation, while also protecting the gut lining integrity and minimising the risk of leaky gut.

Licorice is traditionally used in Western herbal medicine as a demulcent to soothe irritated tissue, including mucous membranes in the gastrointestinal tract. Licorice is often used for gastrointestinal symptoms including reflux, stomach ulcers, colitis, and gastritis or any inflammation of the lining of the stomach or upper gastrointestinal tract.

Chamomile is highly effective in treating digestive upset. It is commonly used for the relief of symptoms related to disturbance of the stomach such as pain, sluggish digestion, diarrhoea, nausea, reflux, bloating, and flatulence. It also aids in the treatment of inflammatory conditions such as IBS and IBD..

Quercetin is a potent and natural anti-inflammatory compound that has been shown to enhance gut barrier function by stabilising mast cells and preventing the release of histamine and other inflammatory chemicals from the cells.

Turmeric has powerful anti-inflammatory properties that help to relieve gastrointestinal symptoms across a range of different digestive conditions. Turmeric has been shown to favour the growth of beneficial bacteria strains (such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli) and reduce the growth of pathogenic strains.

Zinc is arguably the most important mineral for the immune system. It is known to enhance the tight junctions of the intestinal lining, helping to limit gut permeability and reduce the risk of allergies. Diminished levels of zinc often result in opportunistic infections and zinc supplementation has shown to improve mucous membrane integrity in those suffering from diarrhoea.

    Sunflower lecithin
Lecithin is a natural compound that works to improve the mucus layer in the intestine, helping to form a protective barrier, reduce inflammation and prevent the invasion of harmful bacteria.

Silica is important in building strong muscles and tissues within the gastrointestinal tract. Silica assists in rebuilding and fortifying these tissues after they have been damaged by poor diet, parasites, age or other injuries.
